Indigenous History Month 2024
For Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day, EC3 has asked Sarah Lewis to curate a series of videos honouring the talent, culture and creativity of local Indigenous artists in and around the community.
Sarah says: This month asks citizens to not only reflect on the history of this Country, of Nogojiwanong and Indigenous experiences but to amplify Indigenous stories and voices through their chosen medium of expression. This project includes a blend of contemporary and traditional singing styles with and without instruments.
I have been lucky enough to come across each artist in and outside of my community and have been in awe at the beauty and emotion they are all able to evoke. They all come with their own unique, diverse and important voices, all of which I feel would enrich the community during National Indigenous History Month.
The handrum connects and unites us all, and reminds us of that heartbeat of our own mother as well as Mother Earth. I am excited for everyone to catch a glimpse into our beautiful culture and the talented artists in our communities.
Miigwetch.

Aaniin Boozho, my names Franklin Johnson. I’m from the Chippewas of Mnjikaning or Rama First Nation. I currently sing/drum for Granite Ridge Singers which is based out of Curve Lake First nation, but we have members from all over Ontario. I use the drum to connect with my culture through ceremonies and pow wows. I hope to carry these teachings of the drum and its protocols onward to the generation.
